i've never understood why people (mostly on the internet) seem so turned off by it in general, and it seems like if people ever do listen to rap it ends up being something dorky like deltron3030 and atmosphere (i sort of like both people but face it they're both nerdy as ****ing hell) and write everything else off as gangsta ass poser music without realizing a lot of it is rad as hell even if it's full of itself discuss

| I like Biggie and Jigga and Kanye and I'm pretty sure that's the extent of the rap albums I have. I will damn country music much more quickly and more willingly than rap. When people say rapping takes no talent, it's clear that they have higher standards of music (Nickelback, Saving Abel, etc... you know the good stuff). _________________ AWAKEN. AWAKEN. | Kanye, Nas, Talib Kweli, Lupe, Mos Def And as much as I hate Lil Wayne, I always have his song stuck in my head when he has a new one. And I'll kick Asher Roth's ass if I ever see him. _________________ |

I haven't listened to rap in years but I was always kind of fond of Outkast. _________________ Take heed from the turtle, for it cannot go forward without sticking its neck out.

There's something gorgeous about an MC hammering the mic all through a 5+ minute track. I used to consider there to be two sub-genres here: hip hop and hip pop, hip hop being a vocal focus, there's a backing track but what you're supposed to be listening to is the emcee vs hip pop being stuff where rapping isn't the focus (ie. many Kanye tracks), but now I'm not sure any more. I couldn't figure out where to draw the distinction between "this track does not have enough rap and this track does", so I figured it was a stupid idea. I didn't really enjoy rap outside of Tupac, NWA, Doc Dre and the Biggie until a few years back when I realized just how many people were calling Lloyd Banks a jerkoff, and discovered they were completely right. Also, I truly believe Dre and his attitude are largely responsible for the disastrous situation black people found themselves in during the late 80s early 90s, but I still love his rap. EDIT: When I grow up I am going to have Sage Francis's beard. EDITEDIT: Also, Nas did not need to make his "Untitled" album. It was bad (or I should say, pretty unremarkable, he's not a bad artist), the hype around the old title was bad, and he really looked sour through the whole thing. Kinda put me off him, though Illmatic is still killer. _________________

i never understood illmatic being thought of the greatest rap album of all time (same goes for 36 chambers and the like too) but they're all still solid

If you are actually using vanilla ice and hammer as examples of broad spectrum rap, I would disagree. I'm not saying you can't have an opinion, but I am saying you should definitely try more stuff before passing judgment. Because it's really not that you've missed obscure rap groups so much as you've only heard the very worst examples of mainstream radio rap. _________________

Metal music is huge with kids on the net, yet infers an image of strength and power, two concepts that contrast greatly with the typical internet user. _________________
