S A N G U I N A R I A

P R E F A C E

This is a collaborative RP written and created by Adonais, and Cruxis. A lot of thought has been put into the making of this RP. A lot of thought. For organizational purposes, the story will be put here in the first post. You will be able to find the rest of the RP essentials, like the bio formats, and rules and such in the second post. Enjoy!

P R E L U D E

All legends have a beginning, but this one starts with one’s conclusion. It is said that the end of life is not the end of love, but when Arbydros—the benevolent god, the creator of our world—cradled in his arms the human girl in which he had fallen in love, both she and their child in her womb were dragged from the living world, murdered. Never once had this god been denied, and this first devastating loss shook the infrastructure of his sanity. Distraught, the immortal deity wept very mortal tears, gliding from his cheek to the corpse of his love. But swirling in those anguished waters was a curse upon all mankind. Trembling with sorrow and rage, Arbydros uttered these words through his clenched jaw:

“You have not sealed the fate of one but many; you shall know the true meaning of life through the pain of death. Your children will be branded with the mark of this agony, a constant reminder of what you have done. They will suffer for your mistakes and prosper with the strength you seek, and will always looks back towards their ancestors for the source of their misery.”

He said nothing more unless it was to himself, because from then on, Arbydros’ mentality withered along with the world around him. The Great Cultivator, now completely preoccupied by his grief, ignored his garden of Eirianell, and all things began to die. He pleaded with the Shepherd of the Dead, the goddess Oartea, in attempts to retrieve his lost love from the grips of Aizsaule, but failed. This second rejection spurred only more psychological deterioration, and he then resorted to the unnatural and the impossible. With branches as bones, sap as blood, and earth as innards, Arbydros tried to recreate the girl but was unsuccessful. These abominations were cast out one after the other, dismissed both by their creator and the rest of the world.

Conditions for humanity worsened, and with the creation of these atrocities, the people determined that something needed to be done. A group of audacious mortals set out to save the world, in the end confronting the distressed god himself. Armed with a weapon rumored to have the power to slay a deity, they succeeded in severing Arbydros into several pieces. Each hero departed to their homeland with an individual part, securing them in specialized tombs that enabled the piece of the fallen god to again fertilize the earth.

Despite such a victory, a new generation of people had come to pass. The first infant—born mere seconds after Arbydros’ curse was articulated—bore a strange and foreign mark upon his body: a Seed. With the boy’s body, the Seed matured as well, growing into a more complex design as years passed. When the boy finally reached manhood, the Seed became complete. This Seed enabled the individual to harness and manipulate the elements around him or her, bringing about the dawn of the age of magic.

As the years passed from the dawning of the age of magic, mankind grew and harnessed the would-be curse that Arbydros placed upon them. All was well for a time, until the darkening hearts of man decided to misuse the power maliciously. In Crateva, the religious center of Eirianell, corruption had taken root in the form of magic itself.

The Holy Sovereign, the leader of the church, had taken power in the city. Announcing that he had been given divine right by the gods themselves, the Holy Sovereign was viewed as a god on earth, and the devout fanatically believed him. Even the Sovereign himself was taken over by the power he came to possess and thus quickly corrupted the church. Taxes were implemented, passages to heaven were assured by gold, tributes to the church became law.

Far away from the clutches of the Sovereign, the Council of Altsoba watched Crateva spiral downwards. Altsoba was still a young nation compared to Crateva. Their beliefs in science however allowed them the freedom to become more technologically advanced, and thus a threat to the city believing in the old ways. Altsoba refused to believe in “magic.” They explained the mysterious phenomena as alchemy.

So, mounting a massive attack force, the Altsoban army marched on Crateva, with intentions of liberating the oppressed citizens from the church. It was to be a surprised attack. A blitzkrieg of sorts. Upon reaching the Cratevian border however, the Altsobans found something unexpected: The Cratevian Army. Their numbers were greater than the Cratevians. They had nearly double the men. Though the element of surprise was now gone, the advantage of more men was theirs.

Advancing to attack, the Altsoban frontlines charged confidently towards the stoic Cratevians. Then, as if seeming to reach for the sun, the Cratevians raised their hands, and spoke together in unison. In that moment, the space and time seemed to warp around the Altsoban army, twisted and undulating in ripples. For one fleeting moment, nothing seemed to be happening. That was when the Altsoban soldiers began to fall to the ground one by one, dead. Horrified, the Altsobans retreated.

Crateva had stopped what was to be a bloodless coup. The massacre sparked the flames of war between the two nations, one that rages on to this day. The Holy Cratevian Empire versus the Republic of Altsoba. A deadly war with made even more lethal by the powers of magic. And even though Arbydros lay dead, who is to say that other gods have not had their hands in the affairs of man.

S E C O N D P O S T

M A G I C

One branch of magic in Eirianell is known as fonatie (Pronounced: phon-ya-tseh). A mysterious force, it is still not completely understood. How to harness the magic was discovered in Crateva by a young man named Alaois. When the magic is being used (which is done by speaking) the area around the target or speaker appears to warp. When used upon a target, the spell is engraved into their skin. Very powerful and deadly, it can even affect things from long distances.

When a child is born, they are born with a mark called a seed somewhere upon their body. As they grow, so does the seed. It changes shape as if vines were coming from it and begins to form patterns on the body like a tattoo, some of which are intricate and complex. The seed, which was to be a curse from Arbydros is what gives humans the power of magic

When a witch or wizard uses magic, it causes the seed to grow more rapidly in turn causing the vines to do the same. The more powerful magic is used, the longer and faster the vines will grow. The vines, no matter where they started from, always grow towards the throat. When they reach the throat, the begin to constrict around it literally strangling the user. Such is the curse.

When the vines have finally done their dark deed, and the witch or wizard dies, a beautiful flower blossoms forth from their mouth, and quickly overgrows using the body as nourishment. Fonatie is a dangerous gift. If it is used haphazardly, the user may find themselves dead long before their time.

Another branch of magic different from fonatie is alchemy. Alchemy realistically alters organic material into something else by transmutation. There is a basic principal in alchemy. It states that the object being transmuted must be proportional in size to the yielded product. For example:

Twig = needle BUT twig =/= sword

To make a sword, you would need a branch or something similar in length. Alchemy also strengthens the transmuted object. Ex: branch into a sword = wood as strong as steel.

T E C H N O L O G Y

Technology in Eirianell is limited but not nonexistent. Particularly in Altsoba, alternative energy sources have been found because they don’t believe in magic and separate themselves from alchemy. Simple machines that run on crude oil and steam are known to be used on farms and for other small tasks, but no engine has been created that is strong enough to withstand heavy use. Wind power as well as water power are also utilized whenever possible, and since Altsoba is surrounded by plains, wind is particularly useful. At one point Altsoba was even successful in creating an airship—an alchemically-created craft that employs much knowledge on aerodynamics and drag/lift—that relied mostly upon organic materials (as is common with magic and alchemy) and that could fly distances for an extended period of time. The alchemy is complex but possible.

In Crateva—since their culture is heavily dependent on magic—most of their technology is magic-related. Simple machines have been powered by magical “reactions” of sorts, thus allowing some technology to develop. It is safe to say, though, that Eirianell is on its way to becoming more technologically advanced as new ideas are dreamed up each day.

W O R L D

The Luminous Wolrd, Eirianell

~The Northern Reaches

The northern continent is by far the coldest and unforgiving of the three. At its far northern reaches into the mountains and beyond, it is eternally winter, mainly a tundra climate. A pristine white landscape. The southern half of the continent however ranges from taiga to temperate coniferous forests.

Notable Locations:

Crateva – Largest and oldest city in the world. Also its religious center. The Holy Sovereign is in power here and is more in control than the King of Crateva. There are large differences between the rich and poor, and how they live. The architecture here is very regal and reminiscent of Victorian England. The people’s dress could also be described as Victorian. They believe in the old ways, and have more magic practitioners than anywhere else. Many magic academies, and schools.

~The Eastern Continent

The eastern continent has a lush atmosphere with warm to tropical climates. There are many tropical broad-leafed forests and deciduous forests here along with breathtaking beach landscapes. The Nova River, which flows into the Kimimela Sea offers gives the land its richly vegetated landscape.

Notable Locations:

Nayeli – Nicknamed Heaven’s Garden due to its fertile vegetation and flora, the medium sized city’s medieval architecture gives it a quaint and picturesque feel. Set on the Nova river delta, it is a booming place for trade supplying much food, and lumber to other nations.

~The Western Lands

The western continent is a wild place. It is home to mostly sweeping plains, fields, and grasslands, but also forests and mountains. The forested mountains the middle of the continent are thickly covered with ruins and the picturesque mountains in the south are home to some of the most dangerous monsters of Eirianell.
Notable Locations:

Altsoba – The second power of the world after Crateva. It is heavy with Grecian architecture, and resembles Athens in its stern beauty. A republic represented by a small council, most people in the city are refugees and dreamers. They believe in science, shunning the word “magic.” More technologically advanced than any other city. The people are many atheistic refusing to believe in the gods.

Loveil – The nation stuck between the warring cities of Crateva and Altsoba. It is more like a very large colony than a city, but still large enough to declared Neutrality. Its positions keeps the war at bay. The architecture here is inspired by the natives and there are many rustically built buildings, tents, and huts.

B E S T I A R Y

There are many fantastic and fearful animals out of the norm in Eirianell.

Amali – Very small humanoid creatures with elongated bodies commonly known to be faeries. They live in places undisturbed by humankind and have little magic power.

Beleau – Large and beautiful fish with flowing fins and colorful scales that speak human tongue. Ancient animals. They tell fortunes to those that can make them laugh.

Carnivorous Mist – A dangerous purple, (or blue) fog that subsists on humans and other animals. Once it has surrounded its prey, it quickly dissolves its meal, and absorbs it.

Dragon – According to the Cratevian Society of Ancient Animals, there are less than one hundred left. Dragons are very intelligent and stray far from the affairs of man. These creatures are both respected, and feared for their power.

Elemental – Beings that take different forms through different elements. Quite powerful. When one dies, a great sight relating to that element happens.

Fenti – A creature that appears as a child with an awful expression. At night, they sneak into homes and steal the memories and dreams of a person leaving them a hollow shell.

Gorgon – An alluring woman with hair made of snakes and golden claws. Anyone who looks into their eyes turns into stone.

Hala (pl. hale) – A diminutive creature with minimal control over the weather. It resembles an ugly human, has no eyes, and usually carries a black lantern.

Inade – Shark-like creatures that possess the ability to float inches above the surface of water. When they float above the water, fierce winds blow.

J’ehron – Giants that wrap themselves in chains and haunt lonely roads at night. They wear the heads of their victims and carry large massive swords.

Kyubi – Foxes with nine tales. They are taken as signs of bad luck and impending disaster. They can travel extremely fast. Hunting them is a popular sport.

Lynx – A feline forest dwelling creature that is helpful by nature. It acts as a guide to travelers lost within forests and understands human language. They have the power to remain seen or unseen to those walking through their wood.

Meliae – Wood nymphs that can be both friendly and dangerous. They do not trust men and will often seduce and then kill them depending on their attitude.

Nairn – Living caves. They pose as regular caves and when travelers or animals happen to venture inside them, they seal the entrance and devour the unlucky victim.

Oh – Giant man-eating centipedes that live in caves and the mountains. Once they devour their first human, the gain the face of that human and the ability to speak. They know much, and are often (yet carefully) sought for their knowledge.

Perleon – These peaceful animals live in the forests. They resemble dear, but with a few distinct differences. Instead of cloven hooves, they’ve claws. Also, they have wings and are capable of flight.

Qareen – They are usually seen as cute and will gladly do physical labor for humans. (For the price of food.) They appear as squat humanoids no taller than two feet with long arms that trail behind them.

Roc – Giant white birds that live in the mountains. Very territorial. Average wingspan is about 60 ft. Their feather make fantastic products due to their durability.

Saynata – A spirit that like to possess masks. The mask will float, and the spirit can usually be seen billowing out from the back of it. Malevolent spirits.

Tugar – A spirit that can be either good or evil, they inhabit inanimate things during the night and give them life. Very playful/mischievious.

Uremeth – Huge monsters that have the body of a lion, but is blue-silver in color with the additions of massive black horns and a snake for a tail. These are considered the most dangerous game to hunters.

Viruna – A demon that appears as a handsome man seeking someone who can best him in sword combat. If not bested in battle, the Viruna will take the soul of his opponent and deliver the body to his family or loved ones.

Wyvern – One of the more malignant creatures found in the wild, wyverns are related to the nearly extinct dragons. They have one set of wings, and one pair of legs. Size varies.

Xuore – These disturbing creatures has never been seen. There powers, however, have. They rip the hearts out of people and collect them. They then take the hearts, string them together with an invisible thread and make them float in large groups.

Yen – Horrifying half-dead dogs with menacing sets of large fangs. They are able to move through shadows and travel in packs. Known commonly as “Nightmare Hounds.”

Zimitil – A group of star spirits that when and only when an eclipse occurs can they come to Eirianell. If one can find one of the Zimitil, it is said they can grant one wish, but that wish cannot be for immortality.

P E O P L E

The people of Eirianell are as diverse as the landscape. To quickly sum the charactertistics of the people up, the farther south you travel and into warmer climates, the more tanned and darker skinned people you will find. Of course their are exceptions as people move and such.

All right, since the Tales forum seems to be experiencing some downtime again, I'm going to type up a response to danime's post anyway. I'll put up the IC thread here, and put a short recap summary in the first post. Then we can continue as planned and simply copy/paste our posts into the original thread when the forum gets on its feet again. Sound good to everyone?

Also, if anyone didn't get to read some recent posts, let us know and perhaps we can arrange to PM the posts or something like that.

I'll participate where ever the rp is.
We could move it here if we have to, or we could move it to Gaiaonline as well....
We might get more people wanting to rp that way....but I don't really want to move it to Gaia lol

I don't intend to move it to Gaia. There's an RP thread here, but it's outdated because the forums came up last time. We'll just have to figure out who posted last and go from there. =/ I at least save all of my posts to my computer, so I'm set for continuing. I don't know about everyone else, though.

My favorite part of the movie, of course. :3
