| (I'm reposting a lot of news articles recently, but that being said...) http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ariz-bill-decried-license-discriminate-n35081 - Quote :
- PHOENIX — The Arizona Legislature gave final approval Thursday to legislation that allows business owners asserting their religious beliefs to refuse service to gays and others, drawing backlash from Democrats who called the proposal "state-sanctioned discrimination" and an embarrassment.
The 33-27 vote by the House sends the legislation to Republican Gov. Jan Brewer and puts Arizona back at the forefront of a polarizing piece of legislation four years after the state enacted an immigration crackdown that caused a national furor.
Similar religious protection legislation has been introduced in Ohio, Mississippi, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee and Oklahoma, but Arizona's plan is the only one that has passed.
Republicans stressed that the bill is about protecting religious freedom and not discrimination. They frequently cited the case of a New Mexico photographer who was sued after refusing to take wedding pictures of a gay couple and said Arizona needs a law to protect people in the state from heavy-handed actions by courts and law enforcement.
Opponents raised scenarios in which gay people in Arizona could be denied service at a restaurant or refused medical treatment if a business owner thought homosexuality was not in accordance with his religion.
All but three Republicans in the House backed the bill Thursday evening. The Senate passed the bill a day earlier on a straight party-line vote of 17-13.
Republican Sen. Steve Yarbrough called his proposal a First Amendment issue during the Senate debate.
"This bill is not about allowing discrimination," Yarbrough said. "This bill is about preventing discrimination against people who are clearly living out their faith."
Democrats say it is an outright attack on the rights of gays and lesbians.
"The heart of this bill would allow for discrimination versus gays and lesbians," said Sen. Steve Gallardo, D-Phoenix. "You can't argue the fact that bill will invite discrimination. That's the point of this bill. It is." Make that one less state to consider living in. =/ If this does get passed, hopefully people make a point of not supporting businesses that apply this law.

| Jeez, this feels really familiar. I feel like we've dealt with something similar before but I can't quite... Oh. Oh right. | |

What you're doing is protecting the ability to discriminate. This makes me so mad. You'd think, if fairness was a real thing and not just a fantasy, that you would favour protecting the minority that can easily be opressed, not the gigantic fucking religion. Also keeping in mind that fact that religion is a belief, you aren't biologically geared to be attracted to Jesus. Gay people don't really have a fucking choice you backwards assholes.

| This bill takes things too far. And I'm saying this as a person who is somewhat religious.
There's upholding religious liberties - letting an observant Jewish man not work on Saturday, for example. Then there's discrimination.
This bill goes way too fucking far.

As if many of these people accept or even have considered that homosexuality is biological. But yeah, so much for the Senate's initial statement that this wouldn't get anywhere near passing. Essentially we now have to wait for something terrible to actually happen and get the case pushed to SCOTUS so it can be nailed to a stake and ruled as unconstitutional, it seems.

| At least there's a tiny bit of sense in this mess... - Quote :
- An Arizona pizzeria is serving legislators a slice of humble pie.
Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria in Tucson had a message for the politicians who supported a bill that allows business owners to refuse to serve gays and lesbians.
“We reserve the right to refuse service to Arizona legislators,” the sign read.
“Funny how just being decent is starting to seem radical these days,” the restaurant commented on Facebook.
Owner Rocco DiGrazia said he was appalled that the bill, SB 1062, had passed through both houses of the Arizona legislature.
Arizona Rocco's Little Chicago Pizzeria has been getting numerous positive responses to their show of support for the gay and lesbian community.
"The sentiment is that any expansion of discrimination is gonna hurt everybody and open the doors for more," he told AZ Starnet.
After DiGrazia posted his feelings about the bill on the restaurant’s Facebook page, a follower turned his words into a sign. The pizza lover hit print, laminated the sign, and placed it front and center in his restaurant.
Since then, his message has gotten thousands of “likes” and customers are waiting in line for a chance to eat some deep dish and show their support. Their aforementioned sign (because it's too awesome not to repost): For those of you with Facebook, if you want to visit their page and see their remarks, it's here: https://www.facebook.com/roccoslittlechicago

| Yeah, this is about as petty and stupid as it gets. This is seriously like the middle-aged person version of playground bullying. - Arizona Senators 50 years ago wrote:

The owner of Rocco’s Little Chicago Pizzeria is awesome. That's about the most perfect way I could think of to go against the bill.

| Well to be fair lice is actually something that could feasibly affect you. I think the example you're looking for is "cooties." | |

| It's ass-backwards shit like this that makes me ashamed to be an American.
People have rights, but this is just a thinly veiled bill devised for petty discrimination. I say we roundup all these conservative politicians with very dinosaur-like mind frames and ship em off to the Alaskan wilderness. Screw them.

As if many of these people accept or even have considered that homosexuality is biological. Yeah, but there's a much easier argument that shoots them down anyway. They're talking about how they're protecting people's ability to follow them own faith. Choosing to be gay (and thinking God is okay with gays) is simply choosing to follow a different faith.

| Sure, but they're going to discriminate regardless, what the other person's faith is doesn't matter as long as you can still "follow your faith" and deny them. If anything, saying that being gay is a choice even just for the sake of argument legitimizes what they think, to them. | |

1. because this is definitely a matter of opinion 2. no we do not need to respect anyone's opinion, bachmann is an idiot case #4721 - Quote :
- If the tables were turned, Republican Arizona state Rep. Sonny Borrelli said, many opponents of the measure wouldn't be nearly as tolerant as they claim.
"You have a gay person that owns a printing shop, OK. Somebody from the Westboro Baptist Church comes in there and demands that they print and sign that, obviously, the printer is not going to agree with," he said. "Should that religious group demand that print shop print that thing?" Uhh.... Yes they should? That's exactly the point?

So your big example for why discrimination against homosexuals should be allowed, is because you're afraid that the gay dude at your local Kinko's is going to judge your material? I'm not even going to ponder the reasoning behind using the Westboro Baptist Church in the example, even straight people would likely refuse their business.

| This is nothing new at least for me given in truth what was present at the beginning bc and ac wise still stands today just different individuals. Also a lot of people have no form of competence what so ever to cope with the current events so they will take it out on others. As the world continues to deterioate you will start to see ones true character and whats really in thier hearts can only masquerade for a duration prior whatever inside coming out.Forementioned is how you can tell if something is real or not | |
