Worst Voices in Tales

Hi, I'm Count-Montivan, and I'm going to talk about the voices.

To be honest, I really like the Tales series, but like all English voice actors, the voice acting is freaking terrible!  almost all of the characters voices are awful in so many ways.  stop with the english voice actors!  Here is my list:

Luke: the voice actor is unprofessional, he ruined Luke
Tear: see above, except she ruined Tear
Rowen: Todd Haberkorn sounds like he's on crack!
Ion: OMFG, stop casting Erin over!  most annoying actress in gaming!
Yuri: of course it's Troy Baker, and i hate troy baker with a passion
Rita: I can't stand Michelle's voice either! her voice hurts my ears!
Lloyd: I hate Robin in Teen Titans, and this voice sounds exactly the same
Zelos: no comment on christopher
Jude: Sam Riegel is not a good voice actor for God's sake.
Alvin: sounds like a teenager being whiny and crap!  worst voice for tales

I hate all of these worst voices, because they all sound annoying! Ion's voice is freakin cringe-worthy.  Doesn't help that I just hate Erin Fitzgerald so much!  she ruined every character she voiced like Noire and Teepo!!! stop with the english voices already, because I know you guys hate english voices alot

I actually like most of those. English Tear felt so different from the original, though. It was hard for me to look past it.

Why the hell do you like most of those?  Please be more logical.  Erin fitzgerald's voice acting is fuckin terrible, and yuri lowenthal and matthew mercer suck, because they don't know how to voice act properly.

i'm not insulting the voice actors. I'm just telling my opinion on why i hate these voices from Tale, and they need to be stopped. these english voices all sound the game

If you can't take that as an opinion of someone else, I suggest you leave.

Grow up. If you're looking for a forum to reinforce your blatant favoritism for the Japanese actors, you have reached the wrong place.

Yes and yes. I absolutely enjoy her Nowaaa/Noire role.

There's are things called Preferences, likes, opinions, and Liking to understand what the characters are speaking without looking at the lower screen to read subtitles.

Discussing dubs vs. subs can be a good topic. It is entirely possible to be civil about it.

But this is not how you do it. There is a huge difference between "preferring the original voices" and showing outright disgust for anything else, and it looks like the whole Japanese seiyuu elitism thing (or at least the "inferiority" of western voice acting itself) is going to be everything this person is about. It's right in their username.

The main problem is that anime is SUPER over-acted. Unfortunately a lot of people get caught up in the hype and when the English voices aren't super bishounen or super GAR, they get upset. A lot of anime fans also just don't get how annoying certain female characters might sound from the outsider's perspective, but in their own language it's super noticeable.

It's a lot like how I originally felt about SAO's dub. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka is a impressive freak of nature, he literally screams so loud in recordings that he causes himself to get a nosebleed. Bryce Papenbrook delivered a very different performance, but excellent in its own right. He nailed that teenage hero role where he can sound like a badass one moment, but a total dork the next, which is Kirito in a nutshell. Bryce had more range, but Yoshitsugu excelled at the action scenes (not that he was bad elsewhere, mind you.)

Steins;Gate is another great example. It's hard to imagine them picking somebody better than J. Michael Tatum for the role. If you were to watch it for the first time in English, you'd swear that he sounds just like the character looks. The problem is fucking Mamoru Miyano set everybody's expectations unrealistically by being a walking, talking cartoon. The dude has so much range it's insane, it's not the highs or lows, it's the everything in between and the seamless way he can go from a raspy and serious voice to WAHEY WACKY, and he belts out ridiculous dialogue like a gatling gun. Anybody expecting an exact English version of THAT performance was totally in the wrong.

I don't think dubs are necessarily about trying to get an exact match. Once upon a time I did, but dubs like Haganai and The Devil is a Part-Timer have shown me that some serious adaptation goes a long way to making a show super endearing (and man, those Japanese performances are super dry.)

Yeah - while I can always enjoy subs and sometimes prefer them myself, I can really get into and enjoy a good English dub.

The last dub I watched was Fullmetal Alchemist (both 2003 and Brotherhood) and while the acting was a bit spotty in a few areas, overall it was great. Armstrong himself is a perfect example of overacting actually working in a character's favor in both the Japanese AND the English voice acting. He was really annoying, but that's the point - even Ed was annoyed, or even creeped out at times - and that made the character more hilarious than annoying. Also the fact that Armstrong is a total badass (like most of the characters on the show) helped balance out how annoying he could be as well.

What you say about Kirito and Bryce Papenbrook happened in Accel World with Erik Kimerer as Haru. I had already seen the show when it aired, but when I watched it dubbed on Blu-Ray I was blown away by Erik's version of Haru that made him sound like Scott Pilgrim, which REALLY fit a fat school kid with horrendously low self-esteem and social anxiety. Like Papenbrook's Kirito he didn't do the "shounen scream" nearly as well, but he otherwise made a perfect Haru. The rest of the English voices I could have done without, but his performance as Haru alone made me enjoy watching the show even more that second time around.

I do think Sam Riegel makes a very different impression from Jude's original VA, but I like both of them in different ways.

First of all, I want to establish that Sam Riegel is a winner, and that Taiyz is a winner for linking that superb video. 8/10 for improving the thread.

Second, I want to point out the blatant lack of people tripping balls over Johnny Yong Bosch in this topic. It's like the OP does not have the courage to turn their voice actor dreams into reality.

Luke: sounds like an insecure, annoying, annoyed stuck up brat. I give him 10/10 for realism

Tear: while not as convincing as Luke, Tear definitely comes across as an awkward shut-in opening up to the world if you ask me. An 8/10 as far as I'm concerned.

Rowen: in my opinion this guy has the best voice in all of Rieze-Maxia thank you very much. I wish I had a grandpa with a voice like that. An easy 9/10

Ion: gets mad props for actually sounding like a 12 year old enlightened (and deeply depressed for having to shoulder such responsibilities) friend-deprived child. His voice might not be the most enjoyable to listen to on repeat, but I find it damn convincing: 10/10.

Yuri: I think it's a little odd they chose to cast Troy Baker as batman instead of Christian Bale, but Yuri sounds like he's completely aloof most of the time and over the top grimly serious whenever he is actually serious. His voice actor definitely established the character for me, and I must give him props for that. 8/10.

Kratos: this guy is first and foremost a troubled 28-something father. Did he sound like one? No. Did he get the chance to act like one? No. Not everyone can pull of a villainous voice, and not everyone has to, or even should. I give him an 8/10.

Lloyd: This man shows serious emotion in all the right scenes, but makes Lloyd sound a little smarter than he actually is supposed to be in my opinion. That coffee scene though. I want all the outtakes of that. Lloyd's VA gets an 8/10.

Zelos: how can you not love this adorkable self-loathing pitiable voice? I give the voice actor 12/10 for being in-character and being really convincing.

Jude: A very annoying character with an annoying voice in my opinion. Sadly, the annoyances are completely justified and he's a lot of fun to play as. If I were in his situation just when I hit puberty, I'd probably have acted a lot worse (and sounded a lot worse) than he does. He gets better as the game progresses, which is more than I can say for a lot of other actors. I'll give him a 7/10.

Alvin: I have no qualms with Alvin but I do think it is a shame that he mostly resorts to sighing, breathing and choking during his face heel turn. I would've loved to hear some more heartfelt anguish. I give him a 7/10 for latent potential.

The voice I like the most in all of the Tales games is probably Pascal's. The voice actress has such good synergy with the character that I always forget there's an actual person reading the lines.

Mel Blanc, as you can see, opinions differ wildly among people. Did you notice you are not really voicing your opinions though?
You say the voice actors suck without giving any reason whatsoever as to why they suck.

If you were really expressing your opinion, I expect you to say what you think and what your opinion is, as in:
"In my opinion, Sam Riegel is not a good voice actor..." or "I feel that Erin is overrated and should not be cast anymore" or even "I think Todd sounds like he's on crack".
If you just outright say they suck it's as if you are establishing a fact, which is actually insulting.

We are all entitled to our own opinions.

We are not all entitled to changing facts.

Bosch is nowhere near as prominent as he used to be. He's really just doing dubs for for Aniplex, Viz, NISA and Atlus these days. Super niche stuff for the most part.

Add to that, the fact that the largest complaints about English voice actors are that they usually sound the same (which Troy Baker is apparently immune to,) but in Bosch's major appearances in the Tales series (Guy and Emil) he used totally different voices. I mean nobody watched Tales of Phantasia the Animation dubbed.

I do remember people disliking Emil so I dunno, but he did a great job as Guy.

I can't vote on this... because they weren't terrible. I guess I'll go with the ones I know (from favorite to least favorite)

The only one I dislike on that list is Tear. I didn't mind Tear so much in Japanese, but her English VA made her sound so angry and cold all the time. It wasn't a bad voice by any means, I just didn't feel like it really fit Tear's personality all the time.

I am pretty lenient on voice work though. I mean, heck, I made it through all of Arc Rise Fantasia without stabbing anyone or turning off the sound (JK, really. I've heard worse).

Have you listened to Teepo, Raven, and Rita's voices yet?  They're all really annoying.  Do you like them?

Personally I don't have a problem with Michelle Ruff's voice.
She sounds annoying as Yukari but that's because the character was annoying. But she sounds good as Rita (ToV) and Sakuya (GE:B), though.
