Star Ocean 5 Announced by Square Enix, Internet explodes, main character already looks better than 4!

Currently revealed characters include:

Fedel Camus (voiced by Kaito Ishikawa) – The protagonist. He specializes at fencing, and protects the order of his village.
Miki Sorvesta (voiced by Nao Toyama) – The heroine. She is the protagonist’s childhood friend, and loves him like an older brother.

The magazine also has screenshots of a blonde swordsman and blue-haired witch participating in battle.

Battles are seamless and in real-time. Depending on the distance between you and the enemy, the way you attack changes, and pushing buttons consecutively will trigger combos.

In addition to traditional event scenes, there will also be “seamless events” such as those where enemies attack you. If the enemy apprehends your allies during these events, there will be branching outcomes.

Dammit, you beat me to it! I saw this coming with the reveal site (which famitsu just beat to the punch, GREAT GOING SQUEE-NIX).

Not liking the title "Integrity and Faithlessness" or the "uncivilized planet of Feycreed" (creed, geddit?!) as it just sounds like another HERPDERP THE CHURCH IS EVIL plot that's been done to death. Granted "uncivilized" has probably been mistranslated from "underdeveloped". This is Star Ocean after all - gotta keep them using period weaponry thanks to the UP3.

EDIT: Yeah while I read "uncivilized" on Siliconera, Kotaku says "unsettled". "Underdeveloped" is likely the proper term given series staples.

Guys, I had to be a Debbie Downer but remember the quality 4 had. I'm excited to finally see another console release too but I'm keeping any excitement in check till I see more. Another Lymle or emo Edge is possible.

That aside I am curious if 5 will take place after 3. Been waiting nearly 10 years to see how the universe would adapt to the plot twist in 3.

Its between 2 and 3. And suik, the developers sa I they're aiming for an SO3 vibe to it.

Also, i do play SO for the combat. I just hope characters are fun and decent enough in this. Tri-Ace got some rest from SO, so it'll hopefully come around better.

You can definitely tell what characters Akiman designed.

The pink-hair girl is the only one Tri-Ace designed.

The fact there is a male-female childhood relationship just continues the series' love of character archetype cliches.

I hope they make the cutscene akip button more convenient and the gameplay more immersive(better).

The top that green haired girl is wearing...is that her skin?

To be honest, I dudn't find 4 to be that bad. It was a step down from 3 but most of the complaints I find excusable to an extent.

Yes, Lymle's english voice was annoying. Yes, Edge went full emo at one point. But Edge also had a reason for it.

I both love and hate that scene in SO4. It gives us the reason the UP3 was put into effect, but it was executed in a way that made Edge's emoness seem like a major over-reaction.

As for whether SO5 takes place after SO3 it won't, as the star date is between 2 and 3. As much as I'd love for them to retcon SO3's plot twist, I don't think they'll ever make a game that takes place after 3, unfortunately.

The problem with emo Edge is it's execution. Even by jprg standards he was way to melodramatic and unfortunately like you said the impact from all those lives mean nothing by the end of it all. He was grating on my nerves as events went on afterward on Roak. I can't stand Reimi as she's too cliched (which says a lot as this is SO) but man the way Edge just kept going on and on as Reimi's

Does it mean that some in some cliche scene of "party member going to be arrested by royal guards", you can just "f*** no" and slaughter them all because you overgrinded then get branching path? If so, that's gonna be awesome! Though it's probably just "save party member A - can't get party member B" as usual SO...

All the characters (except chubby pink-hair girl) were designed by Akiman. If he designs characters for a game, at least one has to have their ass hanging out. Its his thing.

Im all for cute girls destroying monsters (Neptunia) but instead of facepalming, i find her costume super hilarious.

SO5 announcement makes me want to play SO4 again. Or beat SO3.

I was hoping they'd fix some of the series' recurring flaws but considering they've already backpedaled on one of the only things 4 did right for the series, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Better characters, plot, and overall storytelling for starts - sadly, I'm with you on that boat since they're still going with that character relationship cliche. Not that it matters too much, I like SO for it's gameplay but goddammit is it too much to ask for some better writing?
