PostSubject: Final Fantasy 7 remake   Sat Dec 05, 2015 4:50 pm

First gameplay footage was revealed today...I can't tell if it's running off an ATB or if it plays like FFXV. Hopefully it plays like a proper RPG instead of FFXV or KH.

FF7 is on the PS4 now BTW, it's a port of the good PC port. It's on sale temporarily and you get a Midgar theme.

Also, most importantly, http://www.vg247.com/2015/06/17/final-fantasy-7-director-says-please-look-forward-to-crossdressing-cloud-in-the-gritty-remake/

...Sigh.

I'd imagine if they're going to remake the whole FF7 world, it would be a multi-parter. Also, easier to nickle-and-dime buyers than just selling a bikini outfit for Tifa.

It allows them to get the game out faster, unlike FFXV, plus the original game came on 3 discs, so it makes sense in weird Japanese publisher logic I'm sure. Welcome to this generation, where development costs are ridiculous enough to justify this.

Keep in mind that unless they're fucking stupid, episodic games aren't released at full price per installment, so it's not like being episodic really matters to you since you can wait until it's all out or buy it as it comes out, it's not like being episodic will delay the date that all FF7 Remake content is done. Nobody's as bad as Valve at capitalizing on their brand names.

I don't know if I really care anymore though, since Square-Enix seems to have completely ditched proper RPG gameplay for Final Fantasy titles, opting for either the clumsy KH interface or the soulless Automatic combat of FFXV.

Define proper RPG gameplay for FF titles.
FF keep changing their battle system so the word proper RPG gameplay makes me confused.
Tbh, I don't mind if they go action or turn based as long it's fun.

Someone tell me other sites about videogame news other than Siliconera. Their editor are awful.

The article came from a different site, so even if you don't trust Siliconera's translations (which is a valid concern, their translations can definitely be imperfect) your blame is misplaced.

And by proper RPG, yes, I mean something turn-based with an ATB, like the game this remake is based on. I don't think Kingdom Hearts' battle system is well-designed. It functions, but a passing grade is not strictly a good thing. I don't find them fun to play, as much as I may appreciate the concept. Likewise, Final Fantasy XV is a mess for someone who's used to action games that give you more control over combat, it literally plays like the baby difficulty modes, usually referred to as Automatic in games like DMC and Bayonetta, where you don't have to think about anything, just mash or hold buttons and watch cinematic stuff happen.

I'll always think of Final Fantasy as the "ATB series," and I don't think it's a good idea to stray too far from that. That's why FFXV was more logical as Versus XIII, much like Type-0 AKA Agito XIII, those games were spin-offs (and Type-0 still has that branding) so the vastly different combat made sense. Even though Final Fantasy XII and Lightning Returns had real-time movement, they still leveraged ATBs and still felt like Final Fantasy games.

At the end of the day, I can't be too surprised, since we haven't had full control over our parties since FFX, and the battle systems have just gotten faster since then...But with Bravely Default fulfilling that pre-ATB Final Fantasy niche, it feels like we're losing a specific genre of RPG.

so i missed the news that cc2 is onboard the development team? does this mean more summon with "zoom out for planetary view and huge explosion dome of completely unnecessary wildlide annihilation" effect?

oh wait, we already have bahamut fury supercharging moon with fin funnels to emit orbital laser. CC2 will fit right at home.

About gameplay, well, I'd take KH style over Crisis Core and XV anytime, all the time. That doesn't mean I don't like improvements like having a more strategical approach with ATB playing a rather good role for real-time tactical limiter.

Like you can only do combo according to ATB bar you have and you can chain magicks (yes I use that term) and skills as long as you build up the ATB bar by guarding or dodging.

Nope, it's not just you, that obviously sounds like Tales to me too lel

Anyway, I'm really looking forward to the Materia system, I've always love the way you can combine Materia effects like Slash-All + Added Effect + Contain to petrify random encounter in final dungeon because I'm a scrub who doesn't know the meaning of grinding when I first played the game.

You know that's not at all what I meant. I'm talking about stuff like Resident Evil Revelations 2 and the myriad of adventure games we've had in these past two generations. It's a difference of, are these episodes going to be full games, or are they going to be chapters from one big game? .hack and Xenosaga followed the former idea. Basically what you're telling me is that Xenosaga should've been a three-disc game and told its whole story in one shot.

Episodic releases lead me almost immediately to the "We learned from FF15, guys, we swear" camp.  If that's how it has to happen, so be.

I actually have a great respect for Square's trailer cutters, as they were able to show gameplay without actually telling us anything.  My first impression is some form of turn-based with ludicrously flashy animations, the only way to put all that VRAM to work in a non-dynamic battle system, but the only bar I see looks like the Limit Bar so we have no ATB if that's the case.

If it is real time, yeah, Square is going to have problems.  Their best effort to that end was probably Kingdom Hearts II, and that worked out as well as it did because everything was built around how a single character interacted with it.  Really reminds you of how big a modern game is; you can compare ARPGs to Devil May Cry, but Devil May Cry is corridors, backtracking, and Bloody Palace, what else is there to do but perform six-act ballets of violence upon enemies that died thirty seconds ago? If hardware doesn't create your boundaries, priorities have to.

It can very well be a full game if they expand more on the content of each part, which this remake kinda leans towards from the talk about expanding areas that can be visited in Midgar. To be honest, I felt that Midgar Disc 1 felt longer than what it took me to get to Archylte Steppe in 13, but that might just have been an exaggerated memory of mine. But really, Disc 1 and 2 felt really long compared to the more modern games, probably because they're rather eventful.

Let's see, Disc 1 has the whole Midgar misadventures, infiltrating Shinra HQ, sudden foreboding tone-shift with bloody trails and Sephiroth sword killing the president, two back-to-back boss fight on a descending elevator!, dueling Rufus on the roof, motorcycle chase, and that's only the first part of the Disc. Then we go to Kalm and have the whole false Nibelheim flashback scene (which is really long too, and potential playable Sephiroth?), fighting the Turks a bit, some optional tower defense in Fort Condor, playing CPR in Under Junon, participating in Junon Parade...shit that's really a lot. And we don't even get to the other continent yet. There's still the Barret's friend, Red XIII's father, meeting Cid and Aeris stabbing to get to.

They could probably separate each disc as one full game and we can have Disc One Final Boss in the truest sense! Probably amp up Jenova-Life a bit, and if they want to, they can add a Sephiroth fight before that. Though I'd rather they not because that's going to mess up with the whole symbolism thing with Jenova appearing whenever player confronts Sephiroth and the real body of Sephiroth is actually really weak that get one-shot with Omnislash (or even a Counter).

I wouldn't be surprised if it was one episode per disc either.

Hard to imagine all of disc 1's content in a single episode. While I actually thought the first disc would end after the escape from Midgar way back in my first playthrough, you'll have to consider the cutbacks on the game's engine if they were to actually stuff all of a Disc into a single episode. I'd see 20 GB downloads.

Size isn't really any issue for modern games. Developers seriously don't give a shit. 50GB is rapidly becoming then standard for AAA game installs.

Also, it's really hard to predict what Square-Enix will do, since they have no fucking standards. I too think that it won't be the entire first disc, but I do think it is plausible.

I really hope that's the standard for a "full-game" King Cat, but I see what you mean....

I don't mind it being episodic honestly, I do hope all episodes together form the cost of a full game though.

My biggest wish honestly is that they let us play as the other party members in FF7. If they implement them as very involved and interesting support that can really effect the area maybe I would not mind being stuck as Cloud, but I really would like to not be. I also hope they keep Cloud's sense of humour from the PS1 version, its minimal but its more than he has in Advent Children (but he's also mourning pretty hard in Advent Children so I can see why) I was surprised after playing KH and Dissidia, and watching Advent Children, to find that Cloud isn't actually as brooding as he's portrayed everywhere else and actually talks quite a bit too in a tone that isn't so brusque.

That's not really a problem considering that there are several times when Cloud is not in the party in the original game and we control Barrett/Cid instead. Like that elevator fight! And after the Northern Crater incident.

Final Fantasy fans love to exaggerate, like with the entire FFXIII series.

I too hope that they give Cloud lots of personality, I mean it'd be hard to get through the crossdressing bit in this resolution without some comedy on his part.
