Do what the game is asking you to do on-screen. For some reason there are some extra tutorials that crop up in Lakehaven Heights, I think there's another in Lakehaven Heights once you leave Ladylake for the first dungeon.
They kind of blindsided me as well, I didn't have time to play the game when it first came out so I stopped at the first save in Lakehaven Heights, then when I got back into it and tried to learn the controls again I was confused for a few seconds when a lot of the mechanics weren't working as explained in the menu, because this tutorial is REALLY heavy-handed and isn't clear that it's a tutorial since every battle gives you a tip at the end.
