If you have NXE, just scroll to your Friends tab and there should be a blank avatar with a + next to him. You can search for gamertags to add. To turn off messenger, press the Xbox guide button and flip to your Settings at the right end. Select Preferences and you can Appear Offline for Windows Live Messenger.
