| Is this show even pretending to take itself seriously nowadays?
I watched the first episode and I can't tell.
The rules somehow make even less sense then they did in Duelist Kingdom.

| Pendulum summon is hax I didn't get past ep 1 either tho, and there are some rule changes as well.
5D's was the last series that I liked, though I gotta give Arc V more of a chance.

| Have the rules of the actual physical card game changed, or is it just the anime series' that try to put different, entirely arbitrary spins on the same concept? | |

| Rules have changed in the actual game as well, mainly the fact that you can't special summon first turn, and first turn player cannot draw. It was mainly implemented due to last year's broken format of Dragon Rulers and Evilswarms, but meh. | |

What the ****? What new cards/decks made first turn draw broken?

| The no first turn draw thing is very recent, so much so that I think its still Japan-only and may or may not be adopted abroad. A silly Yu-gi-oh! spinoff that's actually good is not necessarily a bad thing. Â Given the track record of the first three sequels, it could be an entirely different show in it's second half. Â The particularly warped in the YGO fandom already see Zexal as, if nothing else, being honest with how out their the spin-offs have gone. Rant incoming; All the new mechanics are in the real-world game, with some cards being nerfed to be sane, as they always were. Â Not that it matters since the field swarming special summon spamming Zexal's xyz monsters encouraged has effectively broken the game- I see YGO card game related blogs dropping left and right because its simply not worth keeping up with anymore, at least not physically. Â Forget 2006, it's not the game it was in 2009. Â To put it in terms anyone whose played the game can understand; for at least the past year, Mirror Force has been at 2, Magic Cylinder at 3. Â What does the game have to become for that to be okay? It's gotten so bad that we have an entire archetype (The intermingling Evil and Steelswarm families) that's built around punishing it- the entire rest of the game is punished for the actions of one obnoxious play-style. Â Synchro and XYZ monsters are not inherently bad at all; if you take out field swarming nonsense they're actually pretty balanced because the requirements for most of the strongest ones are steep. I play the YGOPro simulator because I still enjoy the game, but what do I run? Â Hate Decks. Â I'm one of the most many people that cannot build decks in those terms, so I just punish them. Â Most archetypes can't do much against, say, an Obelisk the Tormentor that's been made immune to card effects, having Skill Drain (Negate Monster Effects) and Tyrants Throes (Tribute 2 normal monster to block both players from summoning effect monsters PERIOD) on the field simultaneously, or special summoning a Shinato King of a Higher Plane that is simultaneously immune to traps and blocks the opponent from special summoning so long as he's out. - TimeFactor wrote:

The insistence on two-toned hair for every major character in Zexal on is just killing me.

| So the days of having a 4k+ Gren Maju Da Eiza on the field for more than one turn are long gone I guess...
From what I understand from the physical game, it is apparently normal nowadays to completely fill your side of the field almost every turn, and have it completely wiped the next. Ha, if only that would have been possible in 2006...
What about Action Cards though? They just appeared out of nowhere and seemed an even bigger asspull than Pendulum Summoning, which in and of itself is already breaking the game because the main character (Yuzu? Yuya? I can't remember which name is who's) is clearly playing on an entirely different field/ set of rules than his opponent. Channeling a hypercompetent ancient egyptian spirit with insane luck halfway through a duel is one thing, inventing a whole new set of rules on the fly and proceeding to use them halfway through a duel is another matter altogether.
My guess is that eventually everyone will be pendulum summoning left and right. At least I hope so. If not I consider it a major affront to everything card games stand for.
edit: Pokemon changed the rules so you can't attack if you go first anymore either. It might be a trend to nerf the first turn in card games nowadays.

| Oh my so someone DOES play Yugioh on this forum, yay. But yeah, most formats are pop heavy formats, so having a giant 3k+ beatstick without production (hurdur) usually won't get you far into the game, unless you're a Dragon Ruler or Mermail deck.... I remember back when Summoned Skull was OP. This game has become a net-decking card game in which most people would just copy someone's deck, say, a deck that topped a regionals and just use it as their own, barring 1 or 2 tech cards and a change to the extra/side deck but hey, you get the point. Action cards are anime-only iirc which was random as heck when I saw it, I wouldn't pay too much attention to it. And: - TimeFactor wrote:

| Is the Empty Jar Deck still viable or did they phase out/ ban some of the necessary cards? | |

Ignoring that Empty Jar was a gimmick; Dark Worlds, ruining the game for everyone else like a boss... since 2008? Â I don't remember. - Falcom wrote:

To be fair, he's still got one thing; he only needs 1 monster.  Any at all.  And: - TimeFactor wrote:

Dragon Rulers. Dragon Rulers everywhere. You can't spell Dragon Rulers without Dragosack. Â His name is even a pun at everything he does the game both on and off the board. Uggggh, forget 2013, this is this game for whatever life is has left in it: What a farce. Â If nothing else Kazuki Takahashi can say he told the story he wanted to tell (which he did, lest we forget the last story arc had 2 duels, and he requested the spin-offs stop twice- if that's not keeping creative control I don't what is) while getting royalties off NAS and Konami driving it into the ground. Â (Would post another .gif but they aren't working anymore).

| I haven't dealt with anything YuGiOh related in years. Probably because when YuGiOh came out, I was 13 . . . Jesus. Now I'm sad . . . Is there still a Shadow Realm or whatever? | |

| GX had a vaguely-established Dark World, and 5D's had an vaguely-established underworld to go along with the Incan mythology it used in its first arc, but second half of 5Ds onwards darkness has been dropped in favor of sci-fi and aliens. What makes matters worse is the dark world in Duel Monsters isn't explained much better. The Shadow Realm as the dub described it was (clear even to the 10 year olds watching at the time) an invention to avoid implying anyone could actually die. It just ends up helping the mythology- when it's not recoloring saw blades or suddenly turning malls with people in them into portals to the darkness- by elaborating on something that already existed. | |
