Who are the most enjoyable characters to play as?

Which characters do you enjoy controlling the most in the Tales Games you've played?

I'm looking for new characters to control as I usually stick to the default main hero of the story, while as it turns out, most of the time I enjoy controlling other characters much, much more.

Symphonia - Kratos/ Zelos
(spell cancelling is incredibly useful, and I like their artes better than those of most others. Having Lloyd's Tiger Blade artes would definitely be a huge plus though. Being able to heal is always nice.)

Vesperia - Raven
(great spells, great close combat and long-mid range artes, love shot, firing arrows in people's faces in rapid succession...)

Abyss - Natalia (and Guy, he is like Lloyd, but almost too quick for my taste)
(a toned down version of Raven (or rather, Raven is a pimped out version of Natalia), disturbing lack of artes. I'm open to suggestions for other fun characters)

DotNW - Emil
(Insane aerial combos and altered artes depending on the elemental skills you have equipped. Also the most erratic fighting style I've ever seen in a tales game. Still my favorite combatant.)

Graces - Asbel
(I tried... Hubert and Malik. But that failed miserably. I heard Cheria is fun?)

Xillia - Help!
(I played as Jude until now. Defeated the lady in red for the second time, but boss fights (on normal no less) are starting to cost me 14 life bottles on average. I'm doing something wrong completely. Who are the fun characters to control in Xillia?)

I enjoy aerial combat and bows. Do you fine lads and lasses have any advice on which characters I should definitely check out?

I tend to just play as whoever my favorite character of the game is.

Anyway, if you need help with Jude, you need to learn to abuse Snap Pivot, as enemies don't seem to understand how to handle it and it usually leads to free combos.

But if you like aerial combos, then you should probably focus on Milla.

Natalia moveset was made mostly for her to do something else when she's not buffing but the main problem with her artes is their stupid hitboxes though.

I like Guy, I'm very fond of speedy characters and his moveset is great vs big monsters.

Marta, Judith, Cheria, Natalia and Milla.

Don't worry, once you get Beast, it'll be easy mode from then on. At least that's what happened to me.

Beast is such a monstrosity. It breaks Guard, breaks Penetrate/Iron Stance, and downs enemies to boot; and you don't even need to be too close for it to hit. Always start off your attacks with Beast (or use it over and over in case the first didn't break the boss's Penetrate), pick the boss up with Steel or something (Dragon Shot if you prefer aerial combo), combo a bit, then use another Beast to knock the boss down and away again. Repeat for everything.

The key here is to not overextend your attacks because Xillia's bosses are ridiculous. Of course, if you are able to master Snap Pivot, you're going to have a much much easier time, but I can't, so I'm giving a solution that everyone can do.



For the topic, I usually enjoy playing as the MCs, I'm boring like that. I love the play style of some other characters, but in the end, I stick with the MCs.

For example, in Graces, I love Hubert's fighting style. Quick-melee swordplay and having access to long-ranged attacks and spells; so incredibly versatile. Alas, when I control him, I usually die within a minute, so I'll go back to Asbel tanking and dodging stuff like a boss.

In Xillia, Alvin looks so much fun to play, being able to change his artes with charging and can shoot stuff from afar. But, he's slow as f**k. Milla also seems fun to play as, but I just can't get around her floaty attacks and spell-changing shenanigans.

The only game I think I enjoyed playing as other character is Hearts, because Kunzite is really fun. I guess I'm just the type that prefers full frontal assault.

Vesperia: Hard to choose between Yuri, Repede, and Flynn.

Symphonia: Kratos, Lloyd, and Genis.

Graces: Definitely Asbel. Or Hubert.

Xillia: Milla. Jude feels too much like Senel to me and I HATED Senel in battle.

Symphonia 2: Emil.

Abyss: Luke or Guy.

Legendia: Chloe.

And when Hearts R comes out in the US I can already tell I'll stick with Shing/Kor. I haven't played Innocence R but I've watched gameplay and Spada looks like he'd be the character I go with.

Overall, I like to play as characters that have a good mix of spells and artes. Sometimes I like to be a tank and sometimes I like to sit back and cast spells. I am also a sucker for people with darkness spells for some reason. If I could be a summon spirit I would want to be the summon spirit of Darkness, but alas my fate is tied to the summon spirit of Fire for many reasons. I digress.

In Symphonia, I play around as everyone but Genis, Raine, and Colette. I never played much as Regal until Chronicles came out, but now that I now how to use him, and now that he has the arte Force, I think he fun to play as. He does tend to eat up TP rather quickly, in my opinion.

It has been awhile since I have played Dawn of the New World, but I found myself liking Marta more than I did Emil. That probably boils down to the fact that she has artes and spells.

In Abyss, I really like playing as Guy. He is quick and I love his Thunder Beast FOF. I wish that Lloyd had something like it in Symphoia. I also played a lot as Anise since she is an arte/spell combo person.

In Vesperia, I usually play as Raven (he is my favorite character after all). I love how his artes can change depending on his proximity to the enemy if he has the right skills. I feel that opens up his move set. I also played quite a bit as Rita and Yuri. Now that I know Regal a bit better, I may try and play as Judy in my next play through.

in Graces, I really enjoy playing as everyone but Cheria. She is the main healer and I feel a lot of the time that is what I constantly have to do with her. It takes quite a bit of time to get used to him, but Hubert is worth it. I love playing as him. Unfortunately, I feel like you need a lot of CC to get used to him, so starting as him as soon as you get him is probably not the best idea. I like playing as Sophie, especially when I can get her counter attack to work. Pascal also takes some getting used to, but I just love Pascal.

Finally, In Xillia, I pretty much just use Leia. I am not big on playing as the healers, but I am a sucker for people who use a bo. It is my name after all. I also like how she can summon attributes to a character, much like Sheena can.

I must be way too much of a scrub to the series. While I played ToS I'm not even sure it occurred to me that I could play as one of the other characters. So far in ToV I've played Yuri and Karol (I was forced to play Karol as part of the ghost ship-part. It was shocking to see how awful Karol really is).

I was advised to use Rita in a battle in ToV, because of some torches that unlocks an achievement, and I've been told that you unlock some special cutscenes if you play as one of the other characters. Out of curiosity, if I'm playing as someone other than Yuri, and come to a point where the party splits up (which happens A LOT, and it's totally annoying, because I can't check their equipment and stuff when they're gone), will I still be playing as the character selected, or will it default to Yuri?

ToX: Maxwell, obviously Well, I haven't played Jude's side so it's a bit unfair.
ToSc: Not far enough.

Phantasia: Cress and Suzu

Abyss: Luke, Guy, and Anise.
Destiny: Stahn, and Leon.
Eternia: Reid, Farah, and Ras
Symphonia 2: Emil
Graces: Asbel, Sophie, Richard, Hubert, Pascal and Cheria is also okay. Don't enjoy playing as Malik.
Xillia: Jude, Milla are my mains. Also fun are Alvin, and Leia. Elize and Rown are okay too but only with some of the skills you get at a high level.

Seriously. I'm never going to play without it anymore.

That, and tornado blade. Sheesh.

Playing without those has become impossible now.

Hubert Oswell of Tales of Graces is simply fantastic. (Really trying my hardest not to sound biased to my signature and avatar considering this is my first official post on the forums.)

He destroys the field with his acceleration and with high CC, you can basically annihilate multiple enemies at one time. Besides all that though, he is generally a snarky kind of guy and I'm definitely related to him in another fictional dimension.

I realize I never posted in this, I also use my favourites on the most part, but I do have preferences among my plethora of favourites and sometimes play as characters I like but not favourite if they are fun. I always try the whole party but here we go~

Phantasia:

Suzu- Her movepool is small, but she can do a lot of damage pushing an enemy back then trapping them with her wind tech (Omega Storm in GBA). Raiden is great for interrupting casters and Flare Blitz for keeping enemies away. Her movepool is compact, but its JUST ENOUGH. She also has a great combo arte in NDX, as well, Mirror Image is VERY FUN TO USE in NDX. Its almost broken, almost.

Chester- This is who I use if I just can't manage something as Suzu, he can deal MONSTER damage at once with Sonic Bash. Dragon Slayer in most versions is also AMAZING.


Destiny:

Mary- The reason I started liking her initially was actually her battle style, then I found out I really liked her character. I used her pretty much all of the game, I just really loved something about her hard-hitting style, that could still combo pretty well. She hit most of the same weaknesses as Stahn too, except with Light and Ground instead of Fire and Wind.

Johnny- HE IS ABSOLUTELY THE VERY MOST FUN TO PLAY AS. His artes rack up hits REALLY well, he has a healing arte, and he has ridiculous looking artes that deal a lot of damage and look really funny. Definitely the most fun to play as in Destiny

I also used Rutee(quick and Water element) and Lilith (cute fighting style, actually good at combos too) a lot.


Eternia:

Chat- DEALS A LOT OF DAMAGE WITH HER HAMMERS!! Her damage output is actually similar to Farah's apparently, so that means her Pow Hammers, especially on large enemies where they all hit, deal REALLY GOOD DAMAGE. She also deals out status ailments, for an added bonus. Pow Hammer->Status Hammer is a great combo.

Destiny 2:

Judas- He's fragile, but I actually find it best to control him, his magic and artes balance really well, and I love the extensions you can tack on to his artes. I had a lot of trouble with this battle system in general, but I had most fun as Judas.

Symphonia:

Colette- Her S-tree is REALLY fun to combo, the Satellite artes and Whirlwind Rush deal a lot of hits and pretty good damage. I mained her my whole PS3 playthrough like this. Para Ball artes are also AWESOME. Her T-tree artes are pretty great for keeping enemies away if you want to make her caster and Hammer Rain is really good.

Sheena: Yeah yeah, Slap Slap Seal->Pinion->Demon Seal, but she's really fun still! Her combos are satisfying~

I also used Zelos at times.

Rebirth:

Hilda: I found her spells to be really fun to combo honestly.

Legendia:

Jay: Use Ghost Blade and he moves REALLY fast, dealing out combos like this is really fun. He also has a surprising amount you can mix up, even if a lot of his Arcane Eres are just his Base Eres stuck together, they each have something useful and you can string them together differently.

Grune is notable in that she deals a lot of damage and covers a good amount with her spells, she is really useful and fun to unleash death as~ I also used Shirley and Norma as mains.

Abyss:

As said, Natalia is fun but her movepool is sadly lacking

Anise: She's slow, but it can be fun rolling around the battlefield as her, and her spells hit with a good degree of hardness and can usually make the enemy dizzy.

Innocence(R):

Everyone in this game is REALLY REALLY fun to play as, every single one, but I prefer

QQ- She is like...the combo QUEEN, her style is really fast, unique, and just visually pleasing in general.

Hermana: Retained what was good about her in the original, a speedy brawler, they added more to the brawler bit, she can just go off on an enemy in a way that sets itself apart from QQ

I also used Spada/Illia/Ruca a lot

Vesperia:

Repede- HE IS REALLY REALLY FUN, being under some hitboxes can be great, you can make yourself immune to being hit for the span of a combo or two, you can race around the battlefield (you even get abilities that restore HP/TP with free run), and he combos actually surprisingly well. He's like a doggie mix of a thief and magic knight's moveset, with no magic.

Rita- One of the most fun spellcasters to play as in the series, her spells combo well. I also LOVE her whip and book artes.

Estelle- She isn't that practical, I wish they gave her more rapier artes since she is pretty good with a sword, kinda did in the PS3 port. She's really fun and her artes are all pretty. Her spell are also fun to use, especially the Halo one

Judith- I LOVE playing as Judy, her aerial combos were unique in the game and remarkably fun, and she can make the enemy stop bothering her with knockdown attacks or by going overhead and smashing them with her spear or her feet, which is great because she's kind of fragile.

Hearts (R):

Amber- I used her MAINLY, she's a brawler if there ever was one, she really kicks butt with her baton combos. Her fire is also really pretty :0

Beryl: One of the games where spells can combo exceptionally, less so in R, but still pretty well, her brush artes are also cutesy while still being practical. In the original Glorious Arch and Slash Colours were really broken, in R they kinda got debuffed but she can still hold her ground physically.

Kunzite: WOW. He takes classic swordsmen artes and puts a really fun spin on them! He pretty much is an expert and tunnelling into an enemy. Having 6 arms to fight with can do that.

Innes: Kind of slow and hard to use in the original, in the remake she's like a fast Presea with more variety in her artes, her elemental artes are great for getting an area or trapping an enemy.

Cal: HE'S FAST, HE HITS REALLY WELL, AND HE CAN RACK UP HITS. Did I mention he can heal too? He borders on broken.

Graces f:

Sophie: Little speedy brawler that shoots lazers from her face? More like yes. Her pigtails also look pretty in battle.

Cheria: She wracks up hits really well!! Her spells can also get off pretty fast and can be put into knife combos.

Richard: I found him hard to use, but if you can incorporate his spells into his physical moves properly he plays really well and uniquely. He also has good weakness coverage.

I also used the rest of the party a pretty good amount, I always try the whole party out, Malik is who I used the least/not very much at all


Xillia:

Leia: She's great at knocking down enemies, and I find that using Darting Claw->Spiral Strike->Swallow Flight->Staff Rain->Soaring Blast or a variation of this works really, really well. Cerberus Strike can be incorporated as well. Crescent Flash is just fun to use~ I like her unison artes with Rowen and Milla as well.

Milla: A big powerhouse, a one woman army, what you'd expect of a main character basically.

Rowen: Controlling his spells with the tuning ability is SUPER fun, and his knife artes are fun to use successfully.

Abyss:Guy/Natalia Guy's fast pace which I love.  and Natalia is an archer. I love archers!...I'm one too though...
Vesperia:Rita I did mention mages riiiight? =P
Graces:just started  but expecting Pascal or that one long range mage dude.:update Iove using Cheria to attack physically...oh and Malik I can't use.
Xillia:just started and just got Rowen but Milla is PERFECT for me (^.^)/ fluid sword movements with magic attacks~
Legendia:Wow I forgot it but I like Shirley

Abyss:
JADE! i love triggering his FOF changes as a caster. it's challenging but that's what makes it fun for me. i cannot deal with his spear though (yet). so awkward...
Guy is the easy one to pick. proven to be easy enough to handle for an absolute beginner (boyfriends and the like...) since he has a small amount of arts that link well. and he's quick and can recover HP with Center. in the arena, he is almost too easy to use...
I also like to play as Natalia. it was a bit hard to get used to her bow for me, but once that was done it was so much fun. Aerial Laser for stealign and when enemies gang up on you and then resume the assault with more ranged arts.
Tear. weirdly, she is not terrible to handle. I refuse to play as Luke because I can't stand him, so that usually leaves me with her in the beginning of the game. and I went through it with her as well. her spells are really powerful and she can hold herself in close combat too. I just wish she had more artes to back that side of her up.

Dawn of the new world
Both Marta and Emile are great characters to use and I found myself playing as both depending on my mood. Emil has insane aerial combos which are so much fun to use and get elemental changes too. Any character has to live up to him in my books when it comes to aerial combat. and so far no one has (but i must say that i haven't watched every tales game yet).
Marta however......she deals DEATH. Her mystic arte is super OP. Imagine you can spam Tear's hidden mystic arte. YEAH. that OP.... I honestly don't use Emile's mystic arte anymore because it's a waste of an over limit.

Vesperia
Yuri is so easy to handle. his style comes naturally to many players i imagine. i also like that he uses fists and swords like the rogue fighter that he is.
I tried fighting as Rita the first time playing it, but she lacked the skills to set her up i realized later. I will keep my skills and play as her in the next run. Her melee artes look so cute... XD I'll stick to the casting i assume
I also want to give Judith a go in my next run. I tried, but her aerial was terrible at the start. later she got good enough skills though, so i think it could work. do i imagine her to be half as good as Emil? no. not a chance. They did that good a job with him.

To cover all I've played:

Symphonia
Lloyd and Zelso/Kratos, pretty simple stuff.

Emil and Marta
They strangely took the fun out of playing as Lloyd or Zelos,
though maybe I'm just bitter.

Abyss
Guy, hands down.
I love his style and his alt artes are the most satisfying in my opinion

Hearts R
Kohaku, I love playing as her far more than playing as Shingu/Kor.

Graces f
Sophie, no doubt, I love brawlers and especially lightning brawlers like her.
Super satisfying.
I also wanted to get the hang of Pascal better but never really did.

Xillia
Jude, again with the brawler archetype

Xillia 2
Jude again and also Ludger this time

I'll get Vesperia soon and hopefully add a bunch of names from that list.
From what I've seen, Yuri, Judith and Rita all look like fun to use.
