| We're like the last members of a dwindling population of tortoises on some barren grey island. At some point in the recent past, some vital part of the food chain was eliminated. Now the beaches are littered with empty shells, the wind howling through their openings with the deep tones of a Tibetan choir. The moaning chorus has grown stronger as the years pass -a monotonous dirge. Soon, it will be the only sound left.
Ancient and slow, we shamble, eating what sustenance washes up on the rocky shores. We are horrified by what our lives have become, yet still we fear death. We know that soon, each of our voices will join in the song. But not today, we pray. Please not today. | |
