So how do they handle party management and stuff? Can you actually get into a game as a team or can you only set up private matches against one another?
I'm just curious considering the lack of any voice chat or proper local multiplayer (apparently local MP is 1v1 and offline-only, one person on the TV and one on the gamepad, so they don't need to give you that teleport ability because that would require two gamepads to work; do any games on the Wii U even support two gamepads even though the console can?)

Currently you can party up with one friend, and you can join another friend's session to play with (or against) them. Private matches are currently 1v1. The update in August will let you bring full parties of 4 into matchmaking, along with 4v4 private matches.
Nintendo hasn't said anything about voice chat yet. Something Awful and Neogaf are using IRC to coordinate games, and chat between games.
There are currently no games that support multiple gamepads.
Also, the challenge mode DLC that the amiibos added to the game is terrible. I figured with their DLC in previous games like Mario Kart 8 and Mario Golf: World Tour, it would be a nice amount of new content. You just go through an assortment of levels from the singleplayer mode with various restrictions (limited amount of ink, time trials, etc) to unlock new clothes.

The amount of content in this game doesn't really justify the $60, but major props to Nintendo for making a typical TBS formula while keeping it kid-friendly, and so very fun/addictive...even if they released it early to try to keep kids inside the house all summer instead of outside swimming or something.

I had a sneaking suspicion but I'm still surprised.

I finished singleplayer the other day (dat final boss O_O), so today I started playing multiplayer. I'm really glad I stuck it out and got used to the Gyro controls. There's no autoaim so having a way to aim more precisely is helpful. My first life of my first game I just ran right into the action and got a nice triple kill (and then proceeded to get 3 more kills before dying).
Multiplayer is pretty fun, but I'm not a fan of the map system. You only get to play two maps every four hours. I figured the game would alternate between the two, but I played one map 3 times before it switched to the other one. The short game time is kinda nice, especially after years of 10+ minute matches in COD and BF. I especially like how the gameplay encourages movement. You need to paint the ground to win, and you need the paint to move faster. Enemy paint really slows you down.
I really like the starter gun. I had no problem competing with the higher level players and all their cool toys.

The netcode in this game is pretty bad, especially against Japanese players. I don't understand why they match me against them. I'm thousands of miles from Japan.

Bad netcode in a modern Nintendo game? Heresy!

I guess I'm done with this game for a while. The lag and the matchmaking keeps getting worse and worse the more I play this game. In the last game I just played, the enemy team was so laggy we were helpless. I managed to kill one person. They kept us stuck in our spawn for the last part of the game. Its a shame because I think this game has some really good ideas, but I just don't feel like there's enough of a game here to hold my attention for very long. All the things I've come to expect from online shooter games are not present here. There's no challenges to gain extra XP, no mics, no parties (beyond 2 people), no stats, limited game modes, a decent assortment of maps, etc.
I've spent about 2 hours on multiplayer, and the only maps I've played are Port Mackerel, Urchin Underpass, and Saltspray Rig. I've played Port Mackeral more times then I wanted to. I don't understand why it doesn't alternate between the two maps instead of making me play one over and over again.

Because Nintendo doesn't understand the landscape of modern game design.

I haven't experienced any lag so far. A couple of disconnects, but that's it.

I'm not experiencing any lag on my end, its from the other players. Its hard to kill people when they're skipping around the screen, especially Rollers.

Your internet service provider also doesn't look up to third-world countries as a role-model.
I gotta say though, the way that Splatoon handles Miiverse posts as graffiti is super cool. Miiverse is easily the best social platform of the three current-gen consoles, but that is LITERALLY all the Wii U has going for its OS.
The art design of the game is so goddamn good, I think I'm still gonna end up buying the game once it's 20-30 bucks instead of $70 goddamn dollars just to support the cool character designs they've created. I wanna see Inklings in other Nintendo games, tie them into Mario Sunshine 2 or something, like those coloured racing bloopers. Way cooler than Piantas.

Haha :') Well, last night when I played I started getting lag all of a sudden. Guess I had just been lucky until then.
Just beat the final boss. Probably the closest I've been to a heart attack (I'm not very good at these kind of games).

There literally hasn't been challenging boss in a shooter games in years (especially since most shooting games nowadays don't have bosses). Even a shooter veteran like me had some challenge from the boss. Once I figured out that I didn't have to get too close to him, it got a lot easier.

So I've been thinking of getting this game, but I think I heard there was no way to specifically set up matches with friends?
If so, is this still an issue after recent patches?

From what I understand, yeah. Nintendo's still Nintendo so they're a little slow on the friend-matchmaking thing. You can join matches that friends are playing in, but you can't specifically set up matches yet, as you said.
The game is still a hell of a lot of fun though.

Had an awful lot of fun with the single player. I should really play multi much more often. Superb game all around, I'd share/ask for NNID's but it'd be a waste since I don't play online much.
That final boss should be a stage hazard in the next Smash, along with the Inklings as characters of course.
