Bonus costumes in Tales of Symphonia with other Tales-saves present

Sorry if this could have been placed in a different category, I'm tired, can't sleep because reasons and I probably shouldn't post it in two separate categories

I fired up my PS3 to make a little test run of Tales of Symphonia, because I haven't played it for years, and wanted to see how the HD version held up (not graphically impressive compared to more recent titles, but it's certainly playable). Anyway, I was told I unlocked costumes from other games for having an Xillia save on my PS3, and while it's a total hoot running around as Collette dressed as Rita Mordio from Tales of Vesperia (a character I've started to like very much), it made me wonder if I unlock costumes doing this the other way around, by starting up a new Xillia-game with a Symphonia save present.

Also, would having the PS3-version of Vesperia unlock any costumes for Xillia? I unlocked 5 sets for Symphonia with the Xillia save, including Vesperia, Xillia and X2, so I assume there's no more costumes in ToS.

No, I got Graces and Abyss costumes as well. To sum up, I got Xillia, X2, Vesperia, Abyss and Graces costumes, all 5 sets. What I was wondering was if this works the other way around, more costumes in Xillia if I have a Symphonia-save. DreamSword says no.

It's a shame actually that things aren't like Graces F in that you can unlock costumes and wear them without using the title provided like in ToSC.

I might be looking at it the wrong way, but does it matter what title they're using? I know you can use different titles to unlock stuff, but is it important for you that the titles match your opinion of a character? I've never really been much into roleplay, I'm more the kind of guy that looks at something and don't really see character actions in context of the bigger picture, I just see whether I like them or not.

In Tales of Symphonia titles impact how the characters level up. The bonuses from having titles equipped can really add up over time. Costume titles never have any bonuses, so you have to lose out on those if you choose to wear a costume instead. It's not a game-breaker, but it is a bit of a handicap if you play through with costumes instead of a stronger title.

(Titles can also impact what is said during the Coliseum; some of the reactions are pretty funny. )

In Graces you use titles to unlock pretty much everything as far as skills and artes are concerned.

In Tales of Symphonia, titles level your character up stat-wise.
Every title has innate modifiers for different stats at level up. Whenever your character levels up, it gains stats regardless, but it will gain much more of a certain stat with the right titles equipped at level up.

The difference between levelling with the default (or costume) titles versus other titles, like Lloyd's Berserker title or the coliseum titles, is ridiculously huge.

One level of Berserker Lloyd roughly equals 10 levels of default Lloyd in terms of HP and Str and 6 levels in terms of Acc (slightly less in both cases, but still).
So yeah, you've been missing out big time.

For the best effect, you'll probably want the Coliseum titles equipped from the get-go (except for Presea, you'll want Empty Soul, from Abyssion) during the entire playthrough.

In the status menu where you equip titles, you are given an indication which stats will have a higher modifier and which will have a lower modifier when you select a title.

I noticed that some stats were highlighted in green, I had no idea the change was so significant. Seems almost like a miracle I managed to complete the game back in the days.  I suppose if you know what you're doing, you'll want to play the game on mania difficulty for a proper challenge.

I probably have to finish the game at least once to get those titles, though.

Just as a minor clarification, it's not quite 10 levels worth. I did some tests a while back (on the GCN, admittedly) and Lloyd with no title was gaining roughly +60 HP per level. With Berserker, he was gaining roughly +70 HP per level. So it's +10 HP difference (Berserker has a 10.0 modifier for HP). For Str, it's a +1 difference per level. (He gains roughly +5 Str per level baseline; roughly +6 per level with Berserker; note that gains are somewhat randomized within certain ranges so these are averages.) Still, after 10 levels with Berserker, you'd have +100 HP and +10 Str more than you would have had if you'd done those 10 levels with a costume title. When you're level 70 at the end of the game, if you'd leveled the entire game with Berserker, you'd have +700 additional HP and +70 more Str... (Though keep in mind, by that point in the game you'd normally have some 4000 HP as it is. Still, it's a decent-sized boost.)

Especially if you take the increments between your old gear and the new gear in shops into account. Weapons usually increase Lloyd's Str by increments of around 30.

I do recall seeing a huge difference in stats between default Lloyd and Sword of Swords Lloyd though, but that's probably because all stats gain roughly +4 per level).

Nope, he starts at level 3... but, as far as I can tell, auto-levels take title into account. And when you carry over titles in the GRADE shop, the characters keep whatever titles they had equipped on them when you beat the game. So just stick Berserker on Lloyd before you defeat Mithos, start a New Game +, use the 1000 GRADE you got from beating Mithos to buy Titles, and away you go...
