So over the past week I watched Expelled from Paradise and Gargantia on the Verduous planet. Both are post-apocalyptic in that earth is either dried up or flooded, and you've got people from our age or the near future still managing to live on the planet in small tribes or encampments.
I'm curious if there are other shows of this nature that you guys can recommend! I'm especially a fan of character designs like Gargantia's where the gals have "tribal" clothing (I don't know how to better describe it,) so point those out where applicable. (Another example: http://etrian.wikia.com/wiki/Shilleka%27s_Goods#About_the_Owner )
This isn't necessary, but I do like the plot element that you've also got this representative of the future who came from a space society that left earth, and I appreciate the hijinks/adapting/misunderstandings that ensue. Even something where it's like, a foreign/rich traveler comes to meet a tribe of people in the countryside could scratch this itch BTW.
Note that I'm not referring to rebellious post-apocalyptic stuff like Mad Max or Fallout. Time/dimensional travel plots can work for this (like Zero no Tsukaima or Gate I guess, there have been some similar shows in the past couple years as well) but medieval times kind of bore me as a setting these days, so I'd appreciate those recommendations but please point out if it's yet another elves and dragons kind of setting, because that's really overdone in anime especially.

but gate got tanks and helis, thats totally awesome
Buddy Complex is the opposite of this, with the past dude meeting future world. I liked it, but apparently everyone else don't.
Ixion Saga DT is pretty dope, but yeah it's a dimensional travel (hence the DT ....and also the other meaning), but no elf/dragon. It still feel medieval-ish, but a lot more dumb and nonsense. If you absolutely non-critical and just want some good brainless humor, you'd probably appreciate Fukuyama Jun's vocal range here.
Ehh, another dimensional travel would be No Game No Life, and there's elf and shit. And OP protag. The usual Isekai stuff. People hates it. I love it tho, even got me to buy the LN.
yeah these are probably not what you're looking for. i got shitty casualfag taste in japanese cartoon anyhow

Ixion Saga DT and No Game No Life both take place in video-game worlds though, don't they?
Also, generally I try to avoid stuff based on MMOs like Arad Senki: Slap Up Party. Rage of Bahamut is a noteworthy exception, Blade and Soul isn't a good anime right?
The good news is that in trying to remind myself of what the f*** Arad Senki was called, I discovered The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor which is a manhwa that seems super hype.

Ixion Saga DT is supposed to be based off the game Ixion Saga, but I think the anime kinda overshadowed the hell out of the game, with Wiki and Google giving up on shoqing result for the game itself.
If you're talking about the world in the anime, no, it doesn't feel video game-ish (there is no status window, skill acquisition etc, unlike the humongous amount of isekai novel nowadays), and is just honestly a fantasy world with nonsensical stuffs.
No Game No Life is also not a video game world. It's a world where everything is decided with game (chess, poker, shiritori, and well, fps).
btw dont avoid mmo based stuff, youll miss overlord, the best thing ever this season
Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is indeed hype, though the "Weed doing something really selfish but is misunderstood as heroic by the plebs" formula can get stale after a while. It's still fun seeing all the misunderstanding and how Weed, already having epic grade equipments, still intent on hoarding all the loot (rusty sword/armor) and even go so far as stealing others' drops. That pettiness is amazing.
I don't know if Ark has a manhwa, but it's another I would recommend alongside LMS. Ark has better characterization, less OP, and less misunderstood intentions than Weed.
However, Ark is a whole lot pettier than Weed, to the point of cringing in some cases. While Weed doesn't give any f*** towards others in his holy pursuit of wealth and only goes mad when people "touch his rice bowl", Ark can take petty grudges and unsighrly jealousy too far.
Anyway yeah, LMS is gud. Read it.

Nah, I meant that Ixion Saga is based on getting sucked into the a real game's fictional world, not that it actually takes place in the context of players of a game.
And by MMO-based stuff, I meant stuff that tries to tell a story within the lore of an MMORPG's world, not necessarily titles that take place within a fictional MMO.

That's the thing though, there's virtually no information whatsoever we can get about the game itself (and about it's fictional world) since the anime overshadowed the hell out of the game. The game might as well not exist, especially when Wikipedia itself redirect Ixion Saga to the anime page.
I can't see the anime as trying to promote a game (describing the lores and whatnot) at all. It's really just the misadventure of Hokaze Kon and a lot of dumb, nonsensical, crude jokes a la Gintama imo.
And of course:

I've been dying for something like Suisei no Gargantia. Just the Waterworld-esque is under used. D:

Another couple examples of kind of what I'm looking for are Princess Mononoke and Jade Coccoon.
